7 Reasons You Need A Website Over Social Media Page

Hub-and-Spoke-Marketing

I will use Facebook, Simply because it is the most widely used of all social media pages. There are many reasons a Facebook page or any other social media profile does not take the place of a website. Here are 7 Reasons:

  1. You Don’t Own It. Facebook owns your Facebook page. They can shut it down without warning. They can change the way it is displayed without notification. Don’t like the new layout? You can always add code to change it… Yeah Right! You’ll get use to it. True Story: I spent six months building an online presence just to have it deleted, over 5 pages, 60 articles and hundreds of followers. It happens; don’t let it happen to you.
  2. It’s Not Your Domain Name – Your Domain Name is part of your brand. It should be an address online where people can find you. It should be on your business card and on the signature line of your email. When you use your Facebook URL, you advertise that you are using space for your business for free. It gives the impression that you are cheap and possibly a “fly-by-night” business.
  3. You Don’t Control It – Besides not owning the Page, you don’t control it. You may spend many hours and/or hundreds of dollars customizing your page only to have the design wiped out by a Facebook the next day. You can only put certain types of images, where they let you. Gives new meaning to “Free Enterprise”. Your Internet presence should reflect your brand, not Facebook’s.
  4. Lack of Functionality – Having a website gives you the ability to collect email addresses of potential customers interested in your product or service. You can create a questionnaire or survey for free and embed it in your website. You can schedule when information is posted. You can create different content for different customers. And you can sell your products or services straight off of your website. Contact us today, if you want to know how. You can’t do these things with a Facebook page. Even if you do not want to do any of those things at present, do you think it is wise to build your brand on a platform where you will never be allowed the flexibility or functionality you need?
  5. No Analytics – Facebook Page’s Insight is limited… With a website you can use Google Analytics (free) or a Stat counter, you can see how people are interacting with your website. You can see what information they are drawn toward and how long they stayed on your site. You can see where they are not interested to limit your investment toward advertising those benefits and features. You can see what time of day your customers are considering your particular offering to coordinate your social media activity to those times. Your website can give you tons of information Facebook isn’t.
  6. Unreliable Message Distribution – When you post an update on Facebook it is limited to and through Facebook. When you announce a new sale in your status update most of your Facebook friends or fans may never see it. You have limited control over the market reach of your message.
  7. Limited Network – If you have been following the news about Facebook you have seen it has almost stopped growing in the United States. Many Professionals are abandoning Facebook, much like the exodus from MySpace, for a variety of reasons. In my opinion, Facebook is losing its luster, much the same way MySpace did.

Facebook Page does not take the place of your website. It Is Not A Replacement For Your Website. Social media has its place. LinkedIn is a business network and if you are in business you definitely should be on LinkedIn. Having your own domain (realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control) and website makes you a member of the biggest community of the world, the Internet. Build your website as your hub, and then extend your reach into social networks.

  2. Interaction – Interaction and engagement is very important in today’s socially connected world. Followers and potential customers want to connect with you. They want to feel your humanness (whodathunk?). Facebook enables you to do so almost effortlessly. Followers can comment, like, or share something you posted, and most of all, your followers can connect with you, and other followers building a sense of community.
  3. Online presence – Having a Facebook page enables you to: 1.) build an online presence where you can connect with your followers. 2.) have an opportunity to reach the over 1 billion Facebook users. 3.) target specific or different kinds of markets and demographics as well as increases relevance through SEO (Search Engine Optimization).
  4. Drives traffic to your site – By adding your URL (http://www.sample.com/i.e. or web address (http://www.abcxyz.com) in the description area, in posts, or in comments, you have the possibility of driving traffic to your website.
  5. Analyze market – Want to know who your followers are, what the best time to post, who sees it, who is talking about your page, and your reach? Facebook gives you the ability to do so (30 likes first). Think of it as Facebook Analytics!
  6. Easy to manage and update – You don’t have to be a programmer to manage or update your page. It’s as simple as updating your profile’s status or uploading pictures.  Post, comment, reply to an inbox; Remember Reason #2!
  7. It’s free! – O.K., maybe this should have been #1. Who doesn’t love FREE stuff?  Facebook gives you all the above and It’s Free*!

It only takes a few minutes… and It’s Simply:

  • Choose a category and a Page name that represents your business.
  • Pick a logo or another image that people associate with your business to use as a profile picture.
  • Write a sentence about your business so people understand what you do.
  • Set a memorable web address for your Page that you can use on marketing material to promote your presence on Facebook.

When Is the Right Time to Redesign?

Professional, award-winning web design services starting as low as $250

If you run a website, chances are you often wonder whether it is the right time to do a total redesign of the layout of your website. Here are some points to consider:

Are you thinking of a redesign just for the sake of it? If you answered yes to that question, it is not yet the right time to do a redesign. Remember, a design serves a specific purpose. If you are not sure whether to do an overhaul of your site, keep in mind that your current design might have a specific purpose that you might not know about. You will lose that function if you do a redesign. You must consider the purpose for your design and take actions accordingly.

On the other hand, if your website has had the same website design since 2010, perhaps it is high time to do a redesign. The last thing you would ever want to happen to your site is when visitors leave your site without taking a look at your content just because the design is old fashioned. If this is your case, here are some points to ponder before doing a redesign.

Redesigning your website is like performing plastic surgery on it. Your website loses its current identity (for the better or worse) and your regular visitors might not recognise your new design at first glance. You risk losing them just because they thought they landed on the wrong page. Hence, it is very  important that you retain a characteristic feature from your old layout. Perhaps it is the logo of your site; perhaps it is the same text style for the title for your site. Using #Hashtags The Right Way

Facebook finally announced that it now supports clickable #hashtags. For the longest, I couldn’t understand why some of my friends were using hashtags on Facebook (#gmfacebook). The Geek in me kept saying “They don’t work on Facebook! [these idiots]”.  Evidently they were somehow innovators.. Not.

What Are Hashtags?

A hashtag is a word or a phrase prefixed with the symbol #.[1][2] It is a form of metadata tag. Short messages on microblogging social networking services such as Twitter, Tout, identi.ca, Tumblr, Instagram, Flickr, Google+ and finally,  Facebook can be tagged by putting “#” before important words, as in: (#hashaway #facebook #hashitout). You get the picture.

In the case of Twitter, hashtags can be clicked, and once clicked, you are taken to a page that displays comments on that topic to everyone on Twitter.

Hashtags do basically 3 things:

  1.  They allow you to find comments on your interest easily.
  2. They help identify trending topics.
  3. They are clickable allowing you to click and be taken directly to a page displaying all those tweets on that particular topic.

So Why Now?

Until now, hashtags didn’t work on Facebook. You couldn’t search for comments using #hashtags on Facebook, there weren’t really a trending topics functionality on Facebook, and you couldn’t click on them.

Facebook calls the addition the first step of  “a series of features that surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people and topics.” See more “Doing Facebook Hashtags the Right Way

Now that we know hashtags on Facebook do work , let’s discuss how you can use them the right way, use  them to attract potential customers and even discover trending topics and new markets by using them.

Now with hashtags on Facebook, you’ll be able to join in on emerging markets, conversation and news events relevant to you and your customers!

So how do you create hashtags on Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter? Simple, here’s how:

Step 1.

Come up with a hashtag that you want to start using. #makeitunique #brandspecific

Step 2.

Create a fanpage or account/ profile for that hashtag. So if you want to create a hashtag called: (#lordgriffinits) lordgriffinits, use that name as the name of the fanpage.

Step 3.

Tag the page or keyword (metadata) in your wall post. Once you tag the page, the at symbol will disappear and will leave a hyper linked hashtag in or after your comment!

Whola!

So, once you share the post or status update with your friends or followers, they like the page, they can use the #hashtag too. The Social network site will recommend this page or post to your friends. Now you have viral growth and a way to find new followers and trending topics!
